A Railroad Town Between Fowler and Kingsburg
Selma grew up along the Southern Pacific in the 1880s, the second city in Fresno County, as one of a string of small towns where farm goods were loaded for shipping. Four farmers laid out the townsite and began auctioning lots, and the city incorporated just a few years later. There's a popular local legend about how it got its name, and a more likely story involving a railroad employee's wife, Selma Kingsbury.
The Mix of Homes in Selma
Selma's growth since 2000 means two kinds of concrete work:
In older neighborhoods
- Replacing cracked, uneven driveways and walks - Rebuilding front steps - Repairing sunken slabs near the house
In newer subdivisions
- Driveway extensions and side-yard pads - Backyard patios and stamped concrete - Pool decks with a lighter, cooler finish
Heat Is the Main Challenge
Summer days over 100 degrees are routine here. We plan pours for the early morning, dampen the base so it doesn't steal water from the mix, protect the surface from drying while it's finished, and cure it properly afterward. Joints get cut the same day so shrinkage cracks follow straight lines.
What's Under the Slab
Much of the ground in this part of the Valley has a cemented hardpan below the topsoil. It's tough to dig through and can hold water near the surface. We check for it before planning footings or deep base work.
Permits
Selma is an incorporated city, so work on sidewalks and driveway approaches goes through the City of Selma. We confirm the process before scheduling.
